The Cat: Or, How I Lost Eternity by Jutta Richter

Posted by Mrs. Marquez on 11th July 2008

To be quite honest, I found this book to be very odd.  The main character, Christine, talks to a cat each morning on her way to school.  The cat always gets her off track and she starts to get in trouble at school.  This cat is very sure of herself, she believes she is never wrong.  The pictures are stark black, white and yellow drawings in which the cat is often doing fantastical things.  In one picture the cat is enormous, standing on the chimney and touching the moon.  I think this emphasizes the fact that Christine finds her to be larger than life.   The cat is mischievious and makes Christine question her beliefs.  The cat insists that one has to look after their own best interests first and foremost.  Christine is kind hearted and doesn’t want to compromise others to get ahead.  After first reading this book I thought, “Well what was I supposed to get from that?”  I had to read it again before it really sunk in.  I wonder if kids will wonder the same thing.  What was the point?  How does it relate to me?  I know this book was translated from German and I wonder if anything was lost in translation.  Dichos in Spanish never have the same “umph” when translated to English…they are often nonsensical or dull.  The bottom line is, I would probably not quickly reach for this book to use in the library.
